Dual citizenship case adjourned
The dual citizenship trial of Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his Education Minister Peter St. Jean was adjourned yesterday because of the unavailability of a witness.
Before Justice Gertel Thom granted the request, the attorney for both men expressed concern that the trial was taking too long.
During a brief court hearing yesterday, attorney at law Anthony Astaphan also wrapped up his case regarding St Jean.
The United Workers Party (UWP), which brought the case against the two politicians, wants the court to hear the testimony of its final witness, a cruise ship worker who is not in the country.
The witness is expected to give evidence when the case resumes on September 29.
The trial is to determine whether Skerrit and St Jean were qualified to contest the 2009 general elections because of their alleged dual citizenship status.
