Possible full independence for St. Maarten says PM

Almost one year since she became St. Maarten’s first Prime Minister, Sarah Wescot-Williams says she has not ruled out full independence for the Dutch nation.

But she insists that the people of St Maarten will have to decide the next political step for their country.

Wescot-Williams was speaking at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s state of the industry conference which wraps up there today.

She said the current political situation in St Maarten is a testing ground for possible independence and that the level of success enjoyed by the citizens could determine how quickly they give the signal to pursue it.

St. Maarten attained country status on October 10, 2010 after 10 years of negotiations with the Dutch Kingdom for a new constitutional status.
