Jevon Atkinson misses out

Jevon Atkinson broke his national record this morning but it was not enough to advance to the semi-finals of the men’s 50-metre freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Jevon Atkinson clocked 22.83 seconds for fourth place in Heat Seven to smash his previous national record of 23.07.

That record was achieved at the end of June to qualify the overseas based Jamaican for the Beijing Olympics.

Oliver Elliott of Chile won the heat in 22.75.

Jevon Atkinson’s time was joint 45th of the 97 swimmers who entered the event.

Jevon Atkinson’s disappointment came a day after another Jamaican failed to get out of the first round.

On Wednesday, Alia Atkinson, not related to Jevon Atkinson, also broke her own national record in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke but failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Jamaica’s third and final swimmer, Natasha Moodie, 17, will swim in the women’s 50 metre freestyle tomorrow.
