Jamaica’s Women off to winning start in Colombia

Jamaica will play South American side Brazil today in their second Group B match of the 2011 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship in Neiva, Colombia.
The Jamaicans got off to a perfect start by defeating Mexico 69-64 in their opening game yesterday.
Vanessa Gidden led Jamaica with a game-high 28 points, while Nicole Louden scored 19 and Simone Edwards 13.
Mexico, Erika Gomez Lozada scored 21 points, while Brisa Silva Rodriguez had 16.
Brazil also won their opening match by whipping Paraguay 117-34 on Saturday.
Ten countries are taking part in the tournament. And the countries will try to qualify directly for the one spot available to the Americas at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The teams that finish from second to fourth place will gain the right to play at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in June next year with both the dates and the venue to be confirmed.
The top three teams in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament will join the nine teams that qualified automatically.
