The Jamaica Rugby Union (JRU) will pull its bid to host the sport’s biggest event, the Rugby World Cup.

When the International Rugby Board’s (IRB), tendering for the 2019 tournament ended Friday, Jamaica was a surprising candidate among the list.

Jamaica was listed to compete against Australia, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, Wales, Japan and Russia for the right to stage the 2019 event.

However, Chairman of the JRU Sergeant Jacob Thompson said the board’s regional development officer Victor Hyde had put in a bid without consulting the executive body.

He said the country is not in a position to host such tournament.

Jamaica’s men’s team is ranked 85th in the IRB world rankings. The country has never played in the Rugby World Cup.
