Authorities in the United States are reporting that at least six people have died in snow-related accidents following a surprise snowstorm which has hit the US East Coast.

More than three million homes from Maryland to Massachusetts have lost their electricity supply.

Some areas of Massachusetts registered more than 27 inches or 68 centimetres of snow.

The snowfall eased yesterday, as the storm headed north from Maine.

It worsened as it moved north, with state of emergency being declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.

Communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit.
