Brazil approves Chevron plan to contain oil spill

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's oil regulator says it has approved Chevron's plan to plug and abandon a leaking appraisal well off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
The National Petroleum Agency says in a statement posted Tuesday on its website that Chevron Corp. plans to inject mud and cement into the well. It says the leak should be fully controlled within days.
In a statement e-mailed Tuesday, Chevron says its efforts to contain the spill have been successful and there has been a "significant decrease" in the amount of oil coming from seep lines near the Frade well, 230 miles (370 kilometers) off the coast.
President Dilma Rousseff has ordered a "rigorous investigation" to determine responsibility. Several hundred barrels of oil reached the surface of the sea.
