Chelsea Hammond fails to medal
Jamaica’s Chelsea Hammonds recorded a personal-best 6.79 metres but it was not good enough to give her a medal in the women’s Long Jump final this morning.
Hammond finished just outside the medals in fourth position.
The gold medal went to Maurren Higa Maggi, who gave Brazil’s its second gold at the Olympics.
She jumped a season’s best of 7.04 metres. In doing so, she ended Russian Tatyana Lebedeva’s dominance in the event.
The Athens 2004 champions, who won three of the last four world championships, took silver with a season’s best leap of 7.03 metres.
The bronze medal went to Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, who jumped a personal-best 6.91 metres.
Jamaica’s Maurice Smith finished ninth in the men’s decathlon with a total of 8,205 points.
Bryan Clay of the United States won the gold medal with a total of 8,791 points.
Andrei Krauchanka of Belgium took silver with 8,551 points and Leonel Suarez of Cuba won the bronze with 8,527 points.
