Haiti has launched a programme to provide meals to more than two million school children.

The Down With Hunger programme announced by First Lady Sophia Martelly, will also provide employment for at least 10,000 workers.

The government said half of the children targeted under the programme will be under the age of five.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has nominated Ambassador Pamela Ann White, a career diplomat to be the country’s next ambassador to Haiti.

White is a former Peace Corps volunteer, who once served in Haiti as an executive officer for the US Agency for International Development.

If approved by Congress, White will replace US Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten, who has been in Haiti since 2009.
