Asafa win 100 metres in England

Asafa Powell rebounded from another disappointing Olympics by winning the 100 metres in 9.87 seconds at the British Grand Prix yesterday.



The Jamaican former world record holder in the 100, who finished fifth at the Beijing Games, won by three metres.



Powell’s teammate Nesta Carter was second in 10.13 and Trinidadian Marc Burns finished third in 10.16.



There was another victory for Jamaica at the meet.



Melaine Walker easily won the women’s 400-metre hurdles in 54.51 from Anna Jesien of Poland who clocked 55.35.



Jamaica picked up a second-place finish through Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser in the women’s 100 metres. American Lauryn Williams won the race in 11.24.



Fraser’s teammate Sherone Simpson, clocked 11.67 to finish eighth.



In the women’s 200 metres, Jamaican Shericka Williams, 22 .80, was third. Lauryn Williams won in 22.65 to claim the sprint double.



Keliese Spencer of Jamaica, 51.88, had to settle for fourth place in the women’s 400 metres won by Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu in 51.27.



Jamaica’s other competitor, Markino Buckley, 50.04, finished third in the men’s 400-metre hurdles won by Marek Plawgo of Poland in 49.07.



American Tyson Gay won the men’s 200 metres in 20.26, showing no signs of his hamstring problems.
