Craig Sonner, the lawyer for the man accused of the fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American teen Trayvon Martin has said his client was not racist.
The comments came hours after US President Barack Obama said the incident required national “soul searching”.
The accused, George Zimmerman and his wife reportedly served as mentors to two teenage children of an African-American woman.
The police say Trayvon died February 26 after he was shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida.
The volunteer who turned out to be Zimmerman said he was acting in self-defense.
According to police, Martin was unarmed, carrying a bag of Skittles candy and an iced tea.
