Bhutto’s widower new President
Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, has been sworn in as the president of the country.
Mr. Zardari was swept to the presidency in a parliamentary vote, following the resignation of Pervez Musharraf.
He was propelled to the centre of political power when he became head of the Pakistan People’s Party after Mrs. Bhutto was murdered in December.
Following his inauguration, Mr Zardari vowed that Pakistan would work with its neighbours, including Afghanistan, to deal with the region\'s challenges.
Pakistan is said to face severe economic problems and a rampant Islamist insurgency that threatens the country\'s stability.
Mr. Zardari was sworn in at a ceremony in the capital Islamabad, where he pledged loyalty to the constitution and to Islam, Pakistan\'s state ideology.
