Honduras beat Jamaica
Jamaica’s senior footballers last night suffered a major setback in their quest to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa following a 2-0 defeat to hosts Honduras in a crucial Group ‘B’ CONCACAF Semi-Round Qualifying Series.
The match was played in San Pedro Sula.
Ramon Nunes put the Central American team ahead in the 59th minute and Amado Guavera added the final goal from the penalty spot.
Dubbed the Group of Death, from which two teams will advance to the final round of six, the Reggae Boyz remained on one point after three games and will need to win their remaining three matches at home.
Mexico lead the four-team group with maximum nine points following a 2-1 victory over Canada last night. Honduras moved to six points while Canada are also on a point.
The Reggae Boyz’ next match will be against Mexico on October 11 at the National Stadium.
Costa Rica defeated Haiti 2-1 and El Salvador blanked Suriname 2-0.
Clint Dempsey scored his fourth goal in four games as the United States virtually assured itself of making next year’s CONCACAF regional finals with a 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
The United States are at the top of Group ‘A’ with nine points, five ahead of T&T.
