The Anguilla government says it is seeking external assistance to deal with the recent upsurge in gun-related violence.

Chief Minister Hubert Hughes, who also has responsibility for tourism and finance, said that he has privately requested help from the region.

Hughes said he recently met with other political figures including Opposition Leader, Evans McNiel Rogers in a public show of solidarity on the crime and gun related issues.

There have been several shooting incidents in recent months resulting in several people being severely injured.

The fatal shooting of high school student last month has caused much uneasiness in the small island community of some 16,000 people with the church, community groups, politicians, Police Commissioner Rudolph Proctor and British Governor Alistair Harrison condemning the killing.
