Jamaica’s newly appointed senior football head coach John Barnes said he is focussing his attention on the Digicel Caribbean Cup.

The finals of that competition will be played here in the first half of December. It serves as a qualifier for CONCACAF’s flagship tournament, the Gold Cup that is scheduled for the United States next June.

Barnes, 44, said that he is looking to have a major impact in the Digicel Cup.

Jamaican-born Barnes, who played for England at the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals, will be in charge of the Reggae Boyz effective November 1.

When Barnes take charge, the Reggae Boyz will only have one outstanding CONCACAF semi-final Group Two qualifying match remaining on November 19 against Canada.

Former Reggae Boyz Theodore Whitmore will be in charge of the first two games.

Jamaica are currently last in their four-team World Cup qualifying group on one point from three games, with three games remaining.

To have a chance of advancing to the final stage of the CONCACAF qualifying round, they must beat Mexico, Honduras and Canada and hope other results go their way.
