Romney criticises Obama’s new immigration policy

United States Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has criticised the new immigration policy announced yesterday by President Barack Obama, saying it is not the right approach to deal with America’s immigration problems.

Romney says the issue should have been dealt with by legislation rather than an executive order that can be reversed by subsequent presidents.

However, he did not say if he would reverse the measure if he wins the election scheduled for November.

The new immigration policy, which takes immediate effect, allows persons between the ages 16 and 30 years old to apply for a work permit if they can meet several requirements.

Immigration experts believe the plan will benefit close to 1 million undocumented persons living illegally in the US.

But Mr Obama, who is facing a stiff challenge from Mr Romney for re-election, has defended the policy, saying it is the right thing to do.
