The Inter-American Development Bank is to finance a comprehensive, US$66 million project to improve Guyana’s main road network of nearly 4,000 kilometres.

The move forms part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and stem the carnage in frequent traffic accidents in CARICOM’s largest nation.

The IDB said the programme, which includes resources to strengthen the Ministry of Public Works, is expected to enhance urban and suburban mobility and safety by reducing travel times, vehicle operation costs and accidents along key roads.

It said the bulk of the programme’s resources will finance civil works to rehabilitate, improve, expand or construct roads and streets, rehabilitate bridges and culverts, build sidewalks, bicycle paths and bus stops.

The IDB said the programme will also finance a comprehensive study of urban transport in and around the capital, Georgetown.
