Barbados to introduce rent legislation

The Barbadian government has warned unscrupulous landlords who are capitalising on the shortage of low-income housing in that country that legislation is coming to deal with them.

Attorney general Freundel Stuart said the government is concerned that landlords are hiking their rent because of the shortage of residential properties.

Stuart said the administration wants legislation that would prevent a landlord from raising rent above a set limit without the permission of a magistrate.

There have been huge increases in rent for houses and apartments in Barbados in recent years.
