Powell returns home
Former world 100-metre record holder Asafa Powell will return to Jamaica today for the first time since the Beijing Olympics last month.
Sports Minister Olivia Grange will be among the dignitaries who will meet Powell on the tarmac at 6.30 p.m.
Following his disappointment in the quick sprint at the Beijing Olympics, Powell returned to run the second fastest 100 metres in history at the Athletissima Grand Prix on September 2.
He clocked 9.72 seconds to equal the old world record set by compatriot Usain Bolt in New York last May.
The 25 year old Powell, who held the 100-metre world record between June 2005 and May 2008 with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, finished fifth in Beijing.
However, he was a member of the record-breaking 4 x 100 metres gold medal team at the Beijing Olympics.
Powell ended his season on a high on September 17, winning the 100 metres in Poland in 9.89 seconds.
