Belize to decriminalise marijuana

The government in Belize says it’s exploring the possibility of decriminalising the possession of small amounts of marijuana.
According to the Ministry of National Security, a special committee has been appointed to receive feedback from the public and to inform the government on proceedings to introduce legislation to relax Belize’s illicit drugs laws.
It said changes to the law would allow Belizeans to possess up to 10 grams of marijuana without being subjected to legal prosecution.
Currently, the laws of Belize make it illegal to possess marijuana in any amount.
Offenders may be fined up to 50,000 Belizean dollars and imprisoned for up to 3 years.
Officials say if the special committee recommends the decriminalisation of small amounts of marijuana to the government, persons caught with 10 grams of marijuana will be subjected to fines and mandatory drug education, but no jail time.
