Former Prime Minister of the Bahamas Hubert Ingraham has sent a letter of resignation to Speaker Dr. Kendal Major ending 35 years as a legislator.
The 65-year-old, whose Free National Movement was defeated in the May 7 general election, said his resignation will take effect from August 31 this year.
He said he made the decision to allow his preferred candidate, Greg Gomez, the opportunity to meet the one year constitutional residency requirement to run in the North Abaco by-election.
The by-election is due to be held in October.
In the meantime, Ingraham said he intends to make a farewell speech in Parliament before his resignation becomes effective.
Parliament next meets on July 25.
