A United Nations official says the global financial crisis could make it more difficult to feed millions of hungry people.
Director of the UN World Food Programme Josette Sheeran says she is worried that the situation could lead to donor governments cutting back their donations to the agency.
According to the World Food Programme, almost a billion poor people across the world are struggling to survive amid higher fuel and food prices.
The agency is trying to reach those in critical need of assistance in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
Ms Sheeran says the financial crisis will make it more difficult to get the support needed.
