Antigua PM suggests naming LIAT aircraft in honour of Kirani James

Prime Minister of Antigua Baldwin Spencer has recommended that the regional airline, LIAT, name one of its aircraft after Grenada’s Olympic 400-metre gold medallist Kirani James.

The 19-year-old James, who is also the world 400-metre champion, added the Olympics title last week in a new Grenadian and Caribbean record of 43.94 seconds inside London’s Olympic Stadium.

The win makes him Grenada's first Olympic medallist and the first non-American to break the 44-second barrier in the history of the event.

Mr Spencer says James’ victory has made the people of the region proud and is a demonstration that young people from the Caribbean can excel in any field of sports, if they are committed.

LIAT’s chief executive officer Captain Ian Brunton says very shortly the airline will honour James with a tribute that is fitting.
