The 45th International Marlin Tournament gets underway this morning at the old Port Antonio Marina in Portland, with 31 boats including three overseas entries.

The annual event, which is an angling competition, will climax on October 11. Anglers will participate in seven days of gruelling competition, in their quest to land the heaviest blue marlin.

Chairman of the competition, Dr Ron Duquesnay, says only blue marlins weighing 300 pounds or more will be eligible for landing, as, emphasis will be placed on tagging and releasing skills.

The competition was won last year by a Jamaican entry One Love, which tagged and released three marlins as no marlins were caught above the prescribed weight.

Meanwhile, The Port Antonio canoe competition will begin on Wednesday.

The canoe Millington, won last year’s competition with a 500 pound blue marlin.
