Guyana bans Chinese milk
Guyana has joined its neighbour Suriname in implementing a ban on milk from China, recalling one specific product and actively searching for other contaminated goods, which may have entered that Caribbean country.
The Health Ministry issued a recall for \'Milky Evaporated Milk’, which was manufactured in China and has been identified as being contaminated with melamine.
Melamine is a synthetic chemical used in a variety of industrial applications including the production of resins and foams, cleaning products, plastic products, fertilisers and pesticides.
Several children in China have died and more than 53,000 hospitalised after consuming milk containing melamine.
In a release issued over the weekend, Guyana\'s Food and Drug Department said it was engaged in an intensive search of the domestic market for the presence of milk and milk derived food products manufactured in China.
It has so far found the recalled \'Milky Evaporated Milk\' in a municipal market among small vendors, but not in large supermarkets.
The department said that intelligence indicated that the milk was imported through Suriname.
