Anti-corruption unit established in Grenada

The Grenada Police Force has established an anti-corruption unit, in response to near a dozen complaints levelled against officers within the past month alone.

Police spokesman Troy Garvey says the unit has been mandated to urgently respond to, and eventually eliminate, all forms of corruption from within the ranks of the force.

He says the unit will closely monitor the handling of court exhibits including monies and drugs and will establish means through which members of the public aggrieved by police officers can seek redress and appropriate action.

Within the past month, more than 10 police officers have been suspended for engaging in various illegal activities, including issuing cheques without sufficient funds in the bank, brutally beating civilians and sexual offences.

Former Chief Immigration Officer, Superintendent Jessmon Prince, will head the new Audit, Research and Development Department, which is expected to be fully operational by next month.
