Premier Cox loses seat in Bermuda election
CMC - Premier Paula Cox became the first sitting head of government to be defeated in a general election.
The recently formed opposition One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), won the general elections against the ousted Progressive Labour Party (PLP)by a two seat margin last night.
The OBA won 19 of the 36 seats contested in Monday’s general election.
The victory for the OBA ended 14 years of PLP rule and OBA leader Craig Cannonier, a relative new comer to politics on the British Overseas territory declared “Bermuda has seen a new day”.
Cox, who was also finance minister, conceded defeat early Tuesday, saying “the people have spoken”.
Apart from Cox the other ministers who lost their seats were Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Patrice Minors.
