Grenada gears for general election

Prime Minister of Grenada, Tillman Thomas, has asked the country’s governor general to dissolve the parliament paving the way for elections to be held within 90 days.



But he has not given an election date but says he will do so shortly.



In a national broadcast this evening Thomas said the delay in declaring a date would allow Grenadians of voting age to register as all voter registration has to cease immediately after an election date is announced.



Several members of the government have either resigned or have been booted since the Parliament prorogued in July last year.



This evening Thomas also said he delayed calling for dissolution of parliament earlier, to allow certain improvements to the country’s electoral machinery.



Prime Minister Thomas led his National Democratic Congress to an 11-4 victory in the 2008 general election.



Elections are constitutionally due by October.
