Reggae Boyz keep World Cup dream alive

Jamaica last night kept alive their hopes of advancing to the final round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with a crucial 1-0 victory over Honduras at the National Stadium.

The goal was scored by overseas-based Luton Shelton in the 16th minute, his sixth in the country’s 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

It was the second straight 1-0 home victory for the Reggae Boyz following Saturday’s upset against Group ‘B’ leader Mexico.

The result leaves Jamaica with seven points, two behind Honduras, and with a chance of making the six team final round playoff with just one round of games to play.

Mexico lead the group with 10 points after a 2-2 draw with bottom-place Canada at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton last night.

As a result of the draw, the Mexicans are now through to the final round.

It means that Jamaica and Honduras will be fighting for the other spot to the final round, which automatically qualifies three teams to the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.

The fourth-place country will play South America’s fifth-place team in a home and away play-off for another 1010 finals spot.

Jamaica will play its final game against Canada on November 19.
