India’s star batsman Sachin Tendulkar erased Brian Lara’s World record for most Test career runs on today’s opening day of the second Test against Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in India.

The 35 year old Tendulkar reached the milestone on 15, when he guided the first ball after tea from Test newcomer Peter Siddle to third man for three.

He was eventually dismissed for 88 shortly before stumps taking his tally to 12,027 runs at an average of 54.17.

Lara, the former West Indies captain, scored 11,953 runs in his 131 Tests before he retired from international cricket last year.

Tendulkar, playing in his 152nd test, already has the most hundreds in tests with 39, three more than Australian Ricky Ponting.

He also has the record for the most limited-overs run with 16,361 from 417 one-day internationals.

India closed the first day on a commanding 311 for five against the bowling of Mitchell Johnson three for 68.

The not out batsmen are Sourav Ganguly on 54 and Ishant Sharma on two.

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir also scored a half-century with 67, while Virender Sehwag got 35 and Rahul Dravid 39.
