Fire engulfs Mexico City marketplace

Published:Wednesday | February 27, 2013 | 10:24 AM

A fire ripped through a historic marketplace in Mexico this morning, causing extensive damage.

BBC reports that television images broadcast on Televisa show smoke pouring from the market, east of the city's main square, the Zocalo.

However, there are no reports of any injuries.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

According to firefighters, they are finding it hard to contain the blaze and fear it may set alight gas cylinders.

They said the fire had started in the early hours of the morning and had spread through the main hall of the market.

The local metro station has been closed and residents have been asked to avoid the area to allow firefighters to carry out their work.
