Bermuda reviewing parole system
The Government of Bermuda says it will review the existing parole system after the media reported that a man convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl in 2007 was doing supervised work across the street from a house belonging to teen's mother.
Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley said the incident was the result of a genuine fault in the system and that where there are flaws it is the responsibility of the Government to address them.
But Dunkley defended the various initiatives such as the Community Service Programme run by the Department of Corrections saying it helps to prepare inmates for their release.
He said the prisoners also give back to the community by working at homes, churches, schools and public parks and that the initiative has saved Government money.
