A high-ranking United States official has confirmed that former Grenada Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell is not a US citizen.
The new Grenada government said it has been trying to ascertain the citizenship status of opposition leader Dr. Keith Mitchell.
The government said it has evidence that Dr. Mitchell is a US citizen.
US Charge d\'Affaires in Grenada, Karen Jo McIsaac, said Mitchell is no longer an American citizen.
The US official said Dr. Mitchell had revoked his US citizenship on June 20 1995, the day he became Prime Minister.
Dr. Mitchell is currently the longest serving parliamentarian in the country.
The Grenada constitution forbids a non-Commonwealth citizen from holding elected office.
