India take charge
Sachin Tendulkar improved his world record with his 40th test century as hosts India took the upper hand over Australia after today’s opening day of the series-deciding fourth test.
Tendulkar’s 109 from 188 balls carried India to 311 for five at stumps, which put them in a good position to secure the result the team needs to maintain or improve there current 1-nil series lead.
He shared a 146-run partnership with VVS Laxman, 64, for the fourth wicket that steadied the innings after the op order lost three quick wickets shortly before lunch.
The Australians missed two chances to remove the right-hander when Mitchell Johnson dropped him on 85 and Brett Lee spilled a tough chance on 96.
Australia’s debutant off-spinner Jason Krejza was the most successful bowler on day one, taking three for 138.
Shane Watson had one for 35 and Mitchell Johnson one for 54.
