Jack Warner wins by-election to regain seat

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO:

Former national security minister Austin 'Jack' Warner has been returned to Trinidadian Parliament after winning the Chaguanas West by-election.




Warner, the interim leader of the newly formed Independent Liberal Party, defeated four other candidates including Khadijah Ameen, the candidate of the ruling coalition People’s Partnership government.



Preliminary results released showed that Warner, who resigned as national security minister in April, received 12, 631 votes against the 5,126 for Ameen.



The Elections and Boundaries Commission said 27, 045 people were eligible to cast ballot in the by-election.



According to the preliminary figures, Warner received 69 per cent of the votes.

Warner who was at the heart of recent football corruption scandals resigned after the Prime Minister expressed shock at the findings of a probe into the allegation.
