Automatic ban for Bermudan drunk drivers

Published:Tuesday | July 30, 2013 | 12:15 PM

Legislators in Bermuda have now made it mandatory for drunk drivers to face an automatic ban from driving for at least 18 months.

Previously magistrates had discretionary sentencing powers in dealing with motorisists caught driving dangerously or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

However, driving while impaired or refusing to submit to a breath test now attracts a mandatory 18-month ban for the first offence.

A three-year ban is to be imposed for a second offence while subsequent offences carry a five-year ban.
