Mother of slain Grenadian PM dies at 97
Alimenta Bishop, the mother of slain former Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, has died.
Bishop died today at the age of 97.
For years, she tried to get her son’s remains, but complained that her requests were met with silence from the government.
Maurice Bishop was killed in October 1983, four years after taking office in the first ever coup in the English-speaking Caribbean.
His former deputy prime minister Bernard Coard and other senior members of the People’s Revolutionary Government, including Coard’s wife Phyllis, were later imprisoned for their roles in the slaying.
However, they were released years later under new sentencing procedure.
