Jamaica/ Canada face off
Jamaica’s fate in the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa will be decided tonight at the National Stadium.
The Reggae Boyz will face out-of-contention Canada at 8 p.m. in the final round of the penultimate stage of CONCACAF qualifying for the FIFA World Cup finals.
Jamaica must win the game and hope that other results go in their favour.
For Jamaica to advance, they must take three points from Canada and then hope Mexico beat hosts Honduras in San Pedro Sula. If this scenario occurs, Jamaica will move ahead of Honduras and claim the second qualifying spot.
Mexico could miss out on their first finals since 1990 if they lose to Honduras and Jamaica beat Canada by a huge margin and overturn Mexico’s huge advantage on goal difference.
The Mexicans have a goal difference of plus four, while Jamaica have an inferior goal difference of minus three. If Mexico were to lose 1-0 to Honduras, Jamaica would need to win 7-0 to advance.
Coach Theodore Whitmore is aware of the number of possibilities facing the Reggae Boyz if they are to snatch one the two berths to the CONCACAF final round.
Whitmore reveals that the formation will be changed to a three-man attack against the Canadians.
Although the Reggae Boyz have only scored two goals in their last two games, Whitmore is confident that he has the ammunitions to get goals this time around.
The games between hosts Honduras and Mexico in San Pedro Sula will be played simultaneously with the Jamaican match.
Over in Group One, Trinidad and Tobago need a draw against Cuba at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain tonight to see them through to the final round of qualifiers.
