African Caribbean and Pacific countries concerned over trade deal with Europe

African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries ended a two-day meeting in Belgium yesterday expressing concern over the Economic Partnership Agreement with Europe and trade in commodities such as bananas, sugar and cotton.



Speaking at the end of the 98th Session of the ACP Council of Ministers Meeting, ACP Secretary General Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni, told reporters that the meeting had adopted various resolutions expressing the 79-member grouping’s concerns on trade matters with Europe.



He said the EU now includes countries in a similar poverty profile as ACP countries and members of the regional body have to contend with the changes.



However, Mumuni said the the ACP believes that its partnership with Europe should be one that is aiding the ACP countries to achieve some of their national priorities such as eradicating poverty.
