The United Nations has said it estimates that 3.7 million people are in acute need of food in South Sudan as a result of a civil conflict there.

According to the UN, US$1.3 billion is needed to deal with the crisis.

Violence broke out in South Sudan last December as rival army factions went to war.

The conflict has reportedly resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and displaced around 860,000 persons.
