Guyanese businessman arrested after five family members killed in fire
The police in Guyana have detained a businessman who allegedly set fire to his home resulting in the death of his wife and four children last night.
The victims have been identified as Lurlene La Cruz, her daughters, 14-year-old Lea and three-year-old Lavette, and sons eight-year-old Labron and one-year-old Levon.
The businessman, 50-year-old Linus La Cruz, was reportedly hurt in the blaze and is now hospitalised under police guard.
The police say a 12-year-old girl turned up at the Port Kaituma Police Station and reported that her father and mother were involved in an argument and he had threatened to burn down their house.
The police say on their way to the scene they observed that the building was on fire and have received reports that persons attempted to enter the building, but were prevented from doing so because of a locked grille door.
The area does not have a fire station and it’s reported that residents tried unsuccessfully to put out the blaze with buckets of water.
