The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning, will undergo surgery to remove a malignant tumour in his left kidney today.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that Manning, who is in Cuba for the two-hour surgery, checked into the hospital yesterday.

The surgery will be done at the Cimeq Hospital where Manning had valve replacement surgery in 1998 and had a pace maker inserted in 2004.

Last Thursday, the 62 year old prime minister announced that the tumour had been discovered during his annual medical check-up in Havana and that surgery was the best option to deal with the illness.
