Flooding caused by unusually heavy rainfall has triggered a rice-crop watch in Guyana as farmers continue to count their losses.

The general secretary of the Rice Producers Association Dharam-kumar Seeraj, said at least 40 acres of paddy from the previous rice crop have been destroyed by flooding.

He said thousands of acres of paddy fields are still under water in some areas, and predicts more losses.

The association’s president is appealing to the government to provide some financial relief.
