Afghanistan rescue workers end search for landslide victims

Published:Saturday | May 3, 2014 | 1:35 PM

Rescue workers in Afghanistan have given up hope of finding any more survivors from a double landslide that is feared to have killed some 2,500 people.

They have stopped digging through the earth and mud that swamped an entire village in the remote north-east province of Badakhshan yesterday and officials say the site has become a mass grave.

Meanwhile relief supplies such as food, water and tents are pouring in for the survivors who spent last night camped out in near freezing conditions on the open hillside.

Officials say the first landslide, which was caused by heavy rains, buried hundreds of homes.

It is reported that scores of rescue workers who had rushed to the area to help survivors were among those killed in the second landslide.
