Bermudan man wins court award against hospital

The Supreme Court in Bermuda has awarded a father of two close to BMD$60,000 in damages in a negligent suit against the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The court heard that Kamal Williams, a risk analyst, was forced to wait more than 10 hours for an appendectomy at the hospital in May 2011.

It also heard that Williams screamed in pain as he waited in the emergency room.

The delay in offering him medical treatment led to a ruptured appendix, which then sent him into septic shock.

Septic shock is a life-threatening condition that happens when someone's blood pressure drops to a dangerously low level due to an infection.

In his remark, the judge said Williams underwent one of the most unpleasant experiences that a human can undergo.
