T&T gov’t denies coup reports
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is denying reports of an imminent coup in that country.
The denial came yesterday even as hundreds of workers and commuters made their way out of the capital Port-of-Spain.
In a taped message to local media houses, Communications Minister Vasant Bharath dismissed the report as a hoax, which was part of an orchestrated campaign to destabilise the twin island republic.
In 1990, members of the radical Jamaat Al Muslimeen group, led by Yasin Abu Bakr, staged an insurrection aimed at overthrowing the government of then prime minister ANR Robinson.
At least 24 people, including one legislator, were killed during the six day insurrection.
