Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe says African leaders are not brave enough to force him from power.
He reportedly told a meeting of his Zanu-PF party that the US was encouraging African countries to oust him.
However, Mugabe says it would not be easy for the US to send in an army into Zimbabwe
Mr Mugabe also said he would soon meet his political rivals to try to break the deadlock over a unity government.
The Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) says the abductions of its members threaten the talks.
MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai says he will request that a resolution be passed to suspend all negotiations and contact with Zanu-PF if the abductees are not released by January 1, 2009.
