Captain Chris Gayle hit an unbeaten 146 to help West Indies to 278 for seven on day four of the second and deciding Test against hosts New Zealand.

West Indies, who resumed on 62 for two, now lead New Zealand by 214 runs.

It was Gayle’s first Test century since he hit 317 against South Africa in April 2005 and it included six sixes - one of which found a stand roof - and 13 fours.

Gayle also shared a 124-run stand with Brendan Nash, who scored 65.

The century partnership was crucial after West Indies had slipped to 106 for four when Jeetan Patel struck twice, getting the wickets of Xavier Marshall for 18 and Shivnarine Chanderpual for a rare first ball duck.

Patel also got the wicket of Sewnarine Chattergoon for 25 to finish with three for 83. James Franklin supported Patel with two for 40.

Scores in the game so far: West Indies 307 and 278 for seven; New Zealand 371.
