Construction of new Haitian city being hampered by land owners

Published:Saturday | June 7, 2014 | 6:23 PM

The Government of Haiti has revealed that it is facing strong challenges from several property owners in the capital Port-au-Prince as it seeks to take possession of lands needed to construct a new city.

Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe announced this week that 91 per cent of the 1.5 million people living in tents have been relocated and says his administration plan to construct 10,000 homes by the end of President Michel Martelly’s tenure.

Following the announcement, several property owners staged a rally in the Haitian capital complaining, among other things, that they have not been given sufficient time to relocate.

However, Planning Secretary Michel Présumé says the government has taken all necessary measures to protect the interests of all land and property owners in the area defined for the new city project.

Présumé says due compensations have been granted to owners who filed proper documents and adds that those payments would continue as long as owners comply with the legal requirements.
