St Vincent to give free houses to victims of Christmas disaster

Published:Monday | June 9, 2014 | 11:56 AM

The St Vincent and the Grenadines government is providing houses free of cost to people who were left homeless after the devastating storms last Christmas.

Nine people were killed in the Eastern Caribbean island.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves says the free housing project will cost an estimated US$241,000.

He says 90 houses for victims of the December weather system are at various stages of completion.

The low-level through system on Christmas Eve produced torrential rains that triggered floods and landslides across St Vincent and the Grenadines and also affected neighbouring islands of Dominica and St Lucia.
